In 1912 newly weds Percy Harold and Bessie Morgan Rex established their home in Randolph, Utah. They lived and ranched outside of town for their first years there. Bessie was raised in Salt Lake City and helped establish a Ladies Literary Club there as a young woman. She loved the arts and was a talented teacher and writer. </div>

“Drama in the Old Opera house”<o:p></o:p></div>

Written by Vera H. Peart Pulsipher<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0in;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
Under the direction of Alice Reay, Stewart McKinnon and
Bessie M. Rex, many shows were put on in the Old Opera House. Willard and I
took part in most of them.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We were really a Traveling Troupe taking shows throughout
the County. One time we went to Woodruff to put on a play. We were to put on a
matinee for the children and a performance at night for the adults. This one
time the show was not going over very good for the children. Fat (Delbert)
Fackrell, one of the actors, said, “We must do something for the kids to enjoy
of they will go home and tell their parents what a poor show it is and the
adults won’t come out.” With this in mind, they started punching one another
and knocking over tables—anything to make the children laugh. The result was a
large turn-out at the night performance.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Another time Willard was to kiss Stella Israelson, who was
the leading lady. She had a lace dress on and when Willard kissed her, one of
his coat buttons got caught on her dress and there they were, attached to each
other. The curtain had to be dropped. In another one, Willard was the villain.
Joyce, about four years old, was in the audience with her Aunt Thelma. Willard
was “shot” and dropped to the floor; the “catsup” started to ooze out on his
white shirt, and Joyce yelled and cried, “They have shot my Dad.” It brought
the house down in laughter.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Every production had its comedy, as something funny always
happened—like the time “Fat” Fackrell got his coat changed with Mearl Peart. Mearl came out with sleeves to his knees, and
“Fat” was struggling to get into his.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In a show that Stewart was conducting, he was also the
prompter; it got so funny, he got to laughing so hard, he lost the place in the
script. The show had to stop for awhile as the actor forgot his lines and
Stewart couldn’t prompt him.<o:p></o:p></div>

When the MIA sponsored contest dramas, the best one from the
stake would go to Salt Lake to June Conference. Alice Reay directed Woodruff Stake,
which Randolph Ward won and went to Salt Lake in June. Letha Spencer and R. D.
Law were the leading parts: Reuben had to kiss Letha. Blaine (Letha’s husband)
was in the audience, and he said, “you know, I think he likes that too-o-o
much!”<o:p></o:p></div>

My father, Glenn Frazier moved from Woodruff, Utah to Los Angeles, California in 1936. There he lived, attended school, and worked. He left his girlfriend, Helen Rex behind in Randolph, Utah. There she worked in the Rich County Court House where she saved and planned for their future marriage.</div>

In May 1937 Helen vacationed in Los Angles, California with her fiance Glenn. Upon her return to Randolph she wrote a three page letter to her brother Harold Morgan Rex. He was serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil. The pictures she saved and her letter to her brother described her WONDERFUL trip to California. Grateful I am to her brother and family for saving her letter for me. And for Helen! I'm so PROUD of her for pulling off that dream trip. </div>

Cousins Karen and Lee Matthews celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and 80th birthdays. It was such a grand and happy occasion. Karen's granddaughters modeled her wedding dress and other heirlooms. I'd snapped a picture of a very similar item five years ago when I traveled with D. U. P. daughters to central Utah and visited the Fairview Art and Pioneer Museum. I wonder if this was a popular pattern Grandma Aunt Mary or her mother tufted and sewed? <br />

In mid-August cousins Nancy and Flora Lee took me on a grand adventure on top of Monte Cristo. I'd planned on a mid-week retreat to Randolph to be with them. Flora Lee suggested we might be able to find the remains of the cabin my father, Glenn Frazier built on his Monte Cristo homestead in the late 1930's. I couldn't resist. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We visited the Rich County City Hall which is down the street from Flora Lee's Randolph home. Its on the corner of Church and Main Streets. There we poured over land records and found the record and location of Glenn's homestead. We didn't know where he'd built his cabin. I had this picture of it.</div>

<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In last October Conference Elder Bednar spoke of meekness, that often mis-understood and surely under appreciated attribute of our Redeemer. He gave a great description and as I read it afterward I immediately thought of how well it described our beloved Grandfather Rex. Hope it resonates with you. Elder Bednar said, "Meekness is strong, not weak; active, not passive; courageous, not timid; restrained not excessive; modest, not self-aggrandizing; and gracious, not brash. A meek person is not easily provoked, is not pretentious or overbearing and readily acknowledges the accomplishments of others," In the late 30's and early 40's, Grandpa lived through at least three heavy losses with courage, strength and modesty. I think his example is truly worthy of emulation.</blockquote>

Does anyone know how John Morgan came to be called "John Hamilton Morgan?" The book "The Life and Ministry of John Morgan," makes the following statement about the middle name, but the co-author, Nicholas G. Morgan Sr., does not give a source for the information: "Although christened 'John Hamilton Morgan,' the 'Hamilton' name coming from his mother's people, my father confined his name, throughout his mature life to 'John Morgan.'" Every record I recall seeing from John Morgan's lifetime calls him "John Morgan" with no middle name or initial, with the exception of the 1850 US Census, which calls him "John W." Anyone familiar with any letters or other sources that show him using the middle name "Hamilton" during his lifetime?<br />

During August of 1894 Matthias Cowley was attending to John Morgan as he lay dying in Preston, Idaho. Cowley's journal entries reveal some helpful family history facts.<br />
<br />
Last year cousin Karen discovered a drawer full of 5 x 7 index cards her Grandfather Nicholas G. Morgan had copied his own father's journal entries onto. Among the cards were eleven with Matthias Cowley's August 1894 journal entries.<br />
<br />
The card I transcribed below is very telling.<br />

<a href="https://ancestralties.blogspot.com/2017/01/david-w-hamilton-man-of-strict-integrity.html">David W. Hamilton</a>’s recently discovered March 29, 1895 Will

<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> </span>I've discovered that David W.

in Monroe County, Indiana, as is Jesse’s son Frank B. Hamilton.</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
Mr. Burns Peery’s 1917 obituaries tell us a
little about where James [died 1844] and Margaret Hamilton [died 1855] and two
of their children are actually buried. No wonder I’ve never found them during “traditional
searching.”</blockquote>
<div align="center" class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="text-align: center;">
The
Old Peery Homestead and Auburn Hill<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
"Thomas Burns Peery was born on a farm near Kingston, Ind.,
in the old Peery homestead now a part of Auburn Hill. In early boyhood his
parents bought the farm later known has Wm. S. Peery Farm and removed to that
place. ... His father was a pioneer of
Methodism in Decatur county, his home being used as a place of worship in the
early history of the county before there were any churches unless perhaps in
the county seat." (August 3, 1917
Greensburg Standard Newspaper)<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
"The deceased was married to Louisa J. Guest, of Milford,
February 27, 1866, and they resided for about forty years on the farm two miles
northwest of Greensburg, retiring to this city ten years ago." (July 27, 1917 Greensburg Standard Newspaper)<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
All of this helps answer the question of why James and Margaret Hamilton don't appear in any known cemetery records. Their son's Will identifies their burial sites. The names of the brother and sister buried with their parents remain to be discovered. </div>

I've been looking for this picture of my grandmother Bessie Morgan Rex and her hat ever since reading the poem. I believe they go together.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Leave Your Hats Off While We Pray</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
by Annie Malin (1915)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's the rule now for the ladies</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Almost everyplace they go,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To lay aside their head-gear,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And the rule is good I know;</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But if asked for my opinion</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I should very quickly say,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"For goodness sake, my sisters,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Leave your hats off while we pray!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For when the sermon's ended</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's a bustle and a stir</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As if each one feared her neighbor</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Would get out ahead of her;</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's a pinning and a bobbing</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In a most distracting way -</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I feel like say, "Sisters,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Leave your hats off while we pray."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We try to see who's called on'</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To make the closing prayer,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But the sisters still are pinning</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And smoothing down their hair.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I should truly think the brother</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Would forget himself and say,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"We would like to see the sisters</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Leave their hats off while we pray."</div>

<br />
Recently a Find A Grave volunteer took this picture of Great Great Grandmother Eliza Ann Hamilton Morgan's grave site at my request. She was<a href="https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=24379941"> buried here </a>in <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">South
Park Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur, Indiana following her April 18, 1901 passing. She was living in Greensburg with her oldest son at that time.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">Sadly there wasn't anyone living to see to it that a gravestone was placed at her grave site. Or perhaps there wasn't any money to pay for one. Her obituary appeared in the Greensburg newspaper and <a href="http://ancestralties.blogspot.com/2016/01/great-great-grandmother-eliza-ann.html">is posted here</a>. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">It was a pleasant surprise to discover her brother <a href="http://ancestralties.blogspot.com/2017/01/david-w-hamilton-man-of-strict-integrity.html">David W. Hamilton's</a> gravestone prominently placed next to the unmarked area, which is her grave site. His death was five years before hers. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">The part of the story we don't know, is, "where is her husband Garrard Morgan" buried? According to a letter Eliza Ann wrote her daughter-in-law in 1895 Garrard was still living with her then, in Champaigne, Illinois. In the 1900 census (June 14, 1900) Eliza Ann is a widow living with her son William H. Morgan in Fall Creek Township, Middletown, town, Indiana.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">It's presumed Garrard died in Illinois and is buried there somewhere. </span><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"Champaigne, Illinois April 29, 1895<br />
"My dear Daughter [Helen Melvina “Mellie” Groesbeck Morgan]<br />

letters and he puts all the letter writing upon me. Says he cannot wright—I am
sorry to say it is true—he cannot collect his thoughts. I am very fond of
writing letters, but oh how I dread to write your Pa’s.”</blockquote>

According
to Mary Ann Linton Morgan's <a href="http://ancestralties.blogspot.com/2010/10/1932-hamilton-family-history-notes-from.html">research notes</a>, in the late 1700 between seven and
eight-hundred Hamiltons lived in Bracken County which was located about 30
miles from the Blue Lick Springs.<o:p></o:p>
It is essential that we gather all of the identifying sources possible in
putting our John and Elizabeth Hamilton’s family together.<o:p></o:p></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
The

Capt. David W. Hamilton died at noon yesterday at St.
Vincent’s Hospital, after an illness of several years. Captain Hamilton was
born in Kentucky, February 1, 1828 but early in life the family emigrated to
this State, settling in Decatur county, where the boy grew to manhood. At
Greensburg, with his elder brother, John T. Hamilton, he learned the trade of a
saddler and harness maker. From early youth he was a member of the Methodist
Episcopal church, and was very popular there in the days of 1850 to 1861. In
politics he was a Whig of unwavering fidelity, and become a Republican of
unyielding conviction, supporting John C. Fremont with all the zeal of his
ardent nature.</div>

Volunteers. As first sergeant he served in that company in the three months’
service. In the movement from Webster on Phillippi, Va., on June 2, 1861, with
Lient Rickets, of his company, he was detalled to lead the advance guard of the
direct column, and, probably the only time during the long war, two men carried
a lantern at the front, as the night was so dark and rainy and the mud so deep
that the commanding officer deemed it necessary to find the road. These two
officers carried the light within two or three miles of the objective point
when it became so fine a target the outpost pickets of the enemy that it
brought the column to a halt. Upon the reorganization of the Seventh Regiment
for the three years’ service, he was elected as first lieutenant of Company E,
and on the promotion of Capt. Ira Grover, became its captain.</div>

Contracting diseases that made it impossible for him to
march, he was transferred to the invalid corps, and was soon after appointed to
the command of Camp Morton in 1863, where he had charge of the rebel prisoners
therein. He gave complete satisfaction to the government as a pains-taking
commander. When the term of his enlistment expired he was mustered out of the
service, and in a few months, believing his disabilities would permit it, he
again entered the service and was commissioned a captain in the Fifty-first
Indiana. Before leaving the service he was commissioned a major of that
regiment, but was not mustered with that rank before he retired finally from
the service. He was a member of Encampment No. 80, of the Union Veteran Legion
of Indianapolis; a command of “Pap” Thomas Post, G. A. R. [Grand Army of the Republic] of Greensburg, and a
Mason of the lodge at the same place. His remains were taken to his old home at
Greensburg last night. Captain Hamilton lived a bachelor’s life until a few
years ago, when he married an estimable woman, who lived but a few months.<br />

This picture of Garrard Morgan's youngest son, Garrard Morgan IV, has always intrigued me because of his serious lamb-chop-side-burns. The rest of the hair on his head is trimmed so neatly. Recently cousin Karen shared copies of two letters Mary Linton Morgan sent to people in Indiana and Illinois during her search for family information of her deceased husband, John Hamilton Morgan. Her 1925 letter to the Greensburg Indiana newspaper illustrates how far we've come. Morgan's eighty-two year old cousin Woodson Morgan of Peoria, Illinois' response to Mary's 1931 questions led me to Luellie Edison's gravestone in Larimore, Grand Forks, North Dakota.</div>

I found the two following newspaper articles at Ancestry.com once I realized Sarah Louella had married an Edison. Those facts have always been penciled in on one of my mother's pedigree worksheets, however, Edison had been crossed out and changed to Addison. </div>

Whatever the truth or error of these 1885 newspaper stories, Luella did move to North Dakota with Mr. Marsalius Edison. A quick look for a marriage record in the Bloomington, Illinois area has proved fruitless thus far.<br />

I recently received correspondence from another <a href="http://ancestralties.blogspot.com/2009/09/stephen-vestal-and-elizabeth-walton.html">Stephen Vestal Frazier</a> descendant. Allen Frazier, son of Dillan Frazier, first cousin to my father Glenn Frazier wrote me,<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: 10pt;">"We probably have met or at
least been in the same room at one time or another. I attended your
grandfather's funeral and stayed in their home several different
times. I do remember his singing as he went about doing his morning
chores. "I'm forever blowing bubbles," is one I remember.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: 10pt;">"One time my parents and
I planned to sleep overnight before returning to Springville. My dad had
told Emily he wanted to get away early if possible. Sometime during
the night my dad got up to go to the bathroom. Apparently Emily thinking
we were getting up jumped out of bed, fired up the kitchen stove, and began
preparing a wonderful breakfast. My dad was too embarrassed to tell
Emily why he got up and so we ate that wonderful breakfast and returned to
Springville . . . at about 3:00 a.m. in the morning." <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-size: 10pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: 10pt;">Thank you, Allen, for sharing this heart warming account. </span></div>

Helen Rex Frazier pictured some of her favorite things--family icons--in this snapshot. <br />
<br />
Her youngest daughter, <a href="http://ancestralties.blogspot.com/2009/10/susan-frazier-october-20-1951-november.html">Susan</a>, is modeling great great grandmother <a href="http://ancestralties.blogspot.com/2015/12/elizabeth-thompson-groesbeck-and-money.html">Elizabeth Thompson Groesbeck's</a> burgundy with black trim wrapper. Elizabeth's delicate lacy black shawl drapes from Susan's shoulders down to about knee height. She is also wearing Elizabeth's beautiful hand crafted black straw bonnet.<br />
<br />
Susan is standing in <a href="http://ancestralties.blogspot.com/2014/02/bessie-morgan-rex-letter-to-harold-may.html"> Glenn and Helen Rex Frazier's</a> 1970's T.V. room at their <a href="http://ancestralties.blogspot.com/2016/05/memorial-day-2016.html">166 East Oakland Avenue</a>, Salt Lake City, Utah home.<br />
<br />
The fancy side chair behind her to the left came from the Nicholas and Elizabeth Groesbeck home and was part of the family's 1860's dining room set.<br />
<br />
The short wood turned lamp to Susan's right was made for Helen by her younger brother <a href="http://ancestralties.blogspot.com/2013/02/monuments-to-john-morgan-rex-1920-1942.html">John Morgan (1920-1941).</a>Bessiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00932924864316918530noreply@blogger.com1
